How to spend a day in Oslob!
About
Cebu city is a small village at the southern tip of Cebu island, that has recently gained its popularity due to whale shark tourism. Village is still developing, and it is not ready to hosts tourist. There are very few entertaining options, restaurant are not the best, there is no gym (at least when I was there in March 2018), beaches are very far, and there might be very few well maintained accommodations. However, Oslob is a must place to visit for a day and here are the ideas of what you can do after you have finished your swimming with whale sharks.
What to do in Oslob?
There are many people waiting at the entrance o the whale shark sanctuary offering tours and excursions. If you decide to follow my itinerary for this day, you won't need a guide and for very few dollars you will have an amazing time.

Tumalog Falls
Tumalog falls are usual stop for tourist after a visit to whale shark, because they are only are 9 minutes ride away. These gorgeous falls are 91 meter (300 foot) tall, and they are one of the most beautiful ones on the island. Clear water falls over beautiful picturesque rocky mountain that is visible up high, and falls into the pool, while making a soothing mist.
If you are not a good swimmer, don’t worry. The pool itself may be up to your knee high, and during summer sometimes disappears. The water falling from falls, however, is very strong and it will give you a good shoulder massage if you stand below it.
There are many areas for taking pictures, and once you pay for the entrance which is less than a dollar, you can stay as much as you like.
There is a small picnic area with tables that you can also use for a small fee.
How to get there?
If you take a bus from the whale shark sanctuary, they will drop you at the bus stop from where you will take biker-taxi. These riders known as Habal Habal will only drop you on top of the hill where another set of bikers will wait to take you to the falls. We took a bike to reach the falls, we went back walking, which was quite challenging because it was hot and steep, however the view was amazing so we didn’t regret it. Once we reached the top, we took that bike ride back to the bus stop from where we headed to Oslob.
If you are having your own transport, you will have a parking space from where you will have to walk for another 15 minutes.
Tips and tricks***
Biker riders will try to take more money from you, especially if you are a tourist. Try to not give more than 50php, both ways. This is how much it cost in March 2018.
What to bring?
If you are coming from whale shark sanctuary, you will already have all you need.
- Changing clothes, towels
- Snorkeling gears
- Dry bag
- Reef shoes are good if you like to walk around the waterfall
- Water and some snacks are essential; there are no shops at the waterfalls
- Sunscreen
Location: Barangay Luka, Oslob Municipality, Cebu 6025, Philippines

Cuartel Ruins
Once you finish your waterfall visit, you may head to Oslob and explore it for a bit. Just take a bus or jeepney, and after 20 minutes you will reach your next stop Cuartel Ruins.
Cuartel Ruins are part of Oslob heritage park, and they are located by Oslob's beautiful shoreline. Cuartel in Spanish meaning “barracks” in English, is structure that started being built in 1860 but remained unfinished until the end of Spanish occupation in 1898. The construction was built from coral stones by El Gran Maestro Don Marcus Sabandal to serve as barracks for Spanish armies. The Cuartel was served as a first line of defense for Spaniards, however its construction was stopped when Americans arrived.
As part of the ruins there is a small Museum that was established thanks to the donation of people of Oslob. Museum is tiny and it has a small collection of antiques. It makes an interesting visit if you are around there.
There are no fees to enter the Museum however; you are encouraged to donate some money. There are no pictures allowed also, so just enjoy that visit and make sure you take pictures of the outside.

Our Lady of Immaculate Conception
As you will be in front of Cuartel Ruins, on your right you will see beautiful white in stone church, standing proudly. It was designed by the same man, who designed the kiosk of Magellan’s Cross in Cebu, Bishop Santos Gomes Marañon . The Oslob church, how it is popularly called, is one of the oldest on the island, as its establishment dates from 1960. Locals claim that it was made from coral stone that were attached to each other using eggs. In 2008, the church inner part was affected by the fire, however you can still enjoy beauty of it and its surroundings.
Don’t hesitate to walk around and explore. Locals are very friendly and kind, they will let you go through all parts of it.
If you continue your walk to the left via Calle Camposanto, you will reach a nice stone gate that will take you to the cemetery.
I believe that after finishing these activities you will be quite tired to do anything but relax at beautiful shoreline in the Heritage Park. Take advantage of sunset and take some pictures there.
My suggestion is to finish your day by coming back to Dumaguete to your accommodation. Oslob is a small town and apart from what’s written above there is not much to see, and place is just now starting to be popular, so it is still developing. However, Oslob is close to Kawasan Waterfalls, which may be convenient for your next day. If you happen to be in Dumaguete you will have to depart maybe 40 minutes earlier to reach Kawasan at the same time.
